Leo's first flare

This may not be Leo's first flare, but it's my first time to see it. I took the shot in the dark, so used my flash. It almost makes the flare more fierce! I couldn't get a successful shot of him facing me, but believe me... it made hair stand up on my head. It would scare me off if I was another betta, for sure!

nice picture! :D

I actually love watching my boys flare at each other, but they all after awhile become much more calmer and I have to invoke the flaring xD Cupid, my giant, is a beast when he flares! I feel bad for the other guys D:

Does it upset or cause anxiety to invoke a flare? Is it like tapping the aquarium, a form of abuse?

oh no D:
They flare at their own reflection, other bettas/fish, or certainc olors :)

Mine actually flare at my fingers a lot of the time :)

I actually don't see tank tapping as a form of abuse because that's how I get their attention a lot of the time. I've trained mine from the time I get them through a slow method of understanding that the taps mean to come over. C:

My betta flares at brightly colored cereal next to his tank. I don't think that's abuse...

That is quite a great flare, though! I love the colors on that fish.

I think I read somewhere that it's good for a male betta to flare once in awhile. I swear i read somewhere that it can actually keep the male active and like energetic.

It raises their ego a bit if they think they've scared an enemy off, too.

I have read to put a mirror in front of the tank several times a week for 20-30 mins and let them flare. Just don't leave the mirror for too long because it could stress them out.

Short daily flaring sessions are good for the over all health of the betta, it will help be be able to carry their big fins better and is good mental stimulation. But too much flaring can cause stress and can also cause the betta to blow his fins, which is when they flare to much for too long and blow small holes in their fins.

Thank you, guys for your comments! I discovered that he could see his reflection in the front glass of his aquarium in the evening hours. I let him flare for awhile, then turn on the night feature of the LED light and he calms down.
