Is a 35 GPH filter rate too much for a Betta in a 3 gallon?

I want to upgrade my Betta's tank size and quality from a 2.5 gallon with no filter and a lamp over it to a 3 gallon with a flourescent (sp?)light in the hood and a BIO wheel filter system.

The aquarium I want is the Eclipse 3 gallon and it's filter has a GPH rating of 35. Is this too strong for a Betta?

I would say it is way too much. A simple sponge filter with a good airstone and pump would be more than eough for alone betta.

hmm... is there anyway I could slow the filter down? like covering part of it. It will be planted so the current should be broken up...

Maybe I could partially cover the intake with something or put a screen where the water comes out?

I have that tank at work and I'm not thrilled with the filter on it at all. There's no way it's rated at 35 gph and if it is, someone's out of thier mind. No way..if the water goes down more than an inch, it stops flowing all together. From owning that tank and filter, I'd say it's fine. I actually started with a betta in that tank and he was very happy. Really it's not strong at all.

I have the 5 gallon corner; very similar to this tank. The filter is very weak and I also doubt it has 35GHP. Also, it isnt very reliable. The wate runs over the filter cartridge instead of through it, and the water level has to be on the top for it to actually work.

I personally think he will be fine.

alright, thats good. My community tank is the 12 gallon version and I've been very happy with it. But I'm not very experienced so I don't quite know what to expect.

whatever you do dont block the flow into filter!

you can block the flow out of the filter without harming it thou, just not the in flow.

I bought the tank. I almost bought the eclips 5 gallon corner system but I want to take my betta to college and I think a smaller tank will be best.

Thank you guys very much.
