Yeah, anything out of a normal waterway can lead to many problems.
We did not get snow, but we got ice for half the day yesterday.

GhostFeather is the one who gave me that recipe a while back! So give the credit to him.

I've got oak leaves that I've been soaking for a few months. I did this for the infusoria. My (newly aquired and totally awesome) Amano shrimp are going crazy over them! My RCS turn them into skeleton leaves in a few days. I only put IAL w/ the bettas. I plan on intorducing the Amanos in w/ the girls after they're QT'd enough- I wonder what's so special about oak? These critters aren't from anywhere that grows oak trees.

I went for a walk in the adjacent woods near my house b/f the snow. At this time of year, there are lots of little snowmelt streams w/ last fall's leaves and some dirt. I wonder if this could be collected for infusoria? I could keep them in a dark area of the house in Mason jars.

Of course I'll probably be shot on sight by the local Trails association. It's OK to kill a deer, but a paramecium or rotifer? No way!
