I just make sure mine is on the opposite side of the tank from the heater. Height doesn't really matter, unless you have a lot of air blowing across the surface of the tank. If you do, make sure it's pretty low in the water.
That was the other thing, I have it on the opposite side. I figured it would be best to know where the coldest side sits rather than nearest to the heater.
It is holding steady between 81 and 82. I lowered the heater a little because I want it to not go past 82. I might have to turn it down another notch.
