Hello! From Half Moon Bay, CA :)

Hi guys. I've really enjoyed reading all these posts. So helpful!

I don't have a betta yet, still in the research phase. I do keep land hermit crabs (I have 13 in a 60gallon tank ranging from micro to Jumbo-mostly rescued off craigslist) and I learned the hard way that the pet stores can give TERRIBLE info which results in costly and stressful mistakes. SOOOoooo, not rushing in this time.

I'm interested in getting a 5g tank and one male betta. I'd love to hear suggestions on which kind of tank you recommend if you have any. I'm leaning towards the Fluval chi because I like the small footprint and modern design. I'm also open to getting a regular glass 5g with a hinged glass lid and a small light, but I haven't added up the costs on that yet.

I also know I'll need a heater, test kits, etc. May do just one big purchase on Amazon in the upcoming weeks.

Any breeders out there? Any in the SF Bay area? I'd love to buy a fish from a breeder as opposed to a pet store if possible. Not a fan of those teensy cups, and shipping can't be too fun for the fish.

Anyway- Total newbie here. Never had fish before, so feel free to load on the advice.

:)

Welcome & glad to see you are researching ahead of time unlike a lot of us. I have the top fin 5.5g glass tank with a male Betta, a mystery snail & a nerite snail, tank is moderately planted with a couple of caves. I also have a Marineland 5g crescent tank which is acrylic with one male Betta, some silk plants & rock cave. I like both tanks & each has plenty of room for the boys to stretch their fins. Since you use Craigslist keep an out for a good deal on a tank set up.

Hi and welcome to the forum. :)

When picking a tank, longer is better than taller. It's harder for bettas to swim up to the surface in a tall tank because of their long fins.
