Gravel molding?

I wash my gravel once a week and I notice that black/orange mold has started forming on it so I immediately threw it away. Is this supposed to happen and am I supposed to wash it off? The gravel was from a dollar store so I'm planning to get new rocks at petco. I'm not sure if there will be a difference but hopefully it won't mold.

I've never heard of that, odd. Walmart has decent gravel. That is what I use and I have never had a problem $3.97 a bag! It might be a tad more since you are CA though. Not sure!
