Split tail fin

I have had my newest betta about 2 weeks. He holds his tail fin clamped quite a bit. Thought when he got used to the tank that might stop. To some degree, he has gotten better about showing his tail. I noticed yesterday that his tail fin looks a little ragged, actually split in one place. Does something like that heal on its own, or is additional help needed? BTW, I think he is a plakat because of the shorter tail fin than my veil tail was. His home is a 5 gallon office tank with filter, plants and decorations. Would try pics if my phone would work right.
