Sand or Gravel?

I like gravel cause I can theme my tanks well with them, but I want to know.
What's the pro/cons of each?
I really hope to start doing live plants in my tanks really soon, so I guess I'm looking for what will help both the fish and the plants most as well.

Thank you for any and all help! :)

Sand is great if you're putting fish like Cories in your tank, as they like to sift through it with their noses. It also looks very nice with plants and wood. Dirt and waste does not slip through sand like it does in gravel, reducing the amount of cleaning you need to do.

However, it is quite difficult to clean and extremely dusty. You can have quite severe cloudy water for a while after putting sand in your tank and you can't clean it with a gravel vac like a normal substrate.

Gravel is good because you can pick the colour etc. and it is very easy to clean. I recommend you get a smaller grain size to help the plants spread their roots.

It's up to you, really. Sand is better for plants but is harder to clean, gravel comes in a variety of styles, is easy to clean but isn't great for plant growth.

I've actually had 3 different kinds of substrate, shall I say.
My experiences:

Gravel

Pros:
Different colors
Easy to remove if need be

Cons:
Hard to clean food/poop
Not good for fish like cories (or even otos I believe)

Marbles:

Pros:
very clean look
so much fun to accessorize (I've switched colors around)
even easier to remove or move around

Cons:
Poop/food can get stuck
I've had bettas/otos go under the marbles and get "stuck"

Sand

Pros:
VERY clean look
can make any tank look awesome
Safe for all fish
IT's easy to clean up poop and food with vacumn or turkey baster

Cons:
Can cloud water after awhile
Gets EVERYWHERE
Hard to remove from tank

Gravel is easier to clean, but sand actually isn't that hard. I have sand in my 5.5 gallon and I love the look of it. I am probably going to switch my 15 gallon tank to black sand this summer. Personally, I'd go with sand.

Sand sounds more appealing to me, but I've also read things about bettas and sand not mixing. Like how bettas try to eat the sand or something? Could anyone clarify?

I have never seen one try to eat sand, but I don't like sand because it gets everywhere. All of my tanks fall into the heavily planted group for the most part and when you clean/make water changes you kick up sand which settles on all your decorations and plants which you will need to dust off which will settle on plants and ornaments again, which you will need to dust off, you can see that endless loop starting I am sure lol , I have seen gravel that is cory safe it just has to be under 3mm, or at least they claim its cory safe
