This ever happen to anyone?

I have a compulsive tail biter....I've tried everything..... a small tank.....bigger tank.... less decorations....more decorations.....He's in a space where it's calm and there's not too much activity. He's such a beautiful veil tail but more than hal of it is always chewed off. He let's it grow a little and then chews it off again. I'm so sad about it. Any trick with compulsive tail biters?

I don't have a tail biter but I wondered if a tank companion would be a distraction from tail biting. Others can weigh in on that but it came to mind.

I have a tail biter and he is now in a divided tank where he can see another male through the divider. He seems to be slowing down a bit. I know another person on here who had success by putting the tail biter's tank in a high traffic part of their house. You can also try a ping pong ball floating on top of his water as a toy.

I have a tail biter..... I think I'm finally starting to get a handle on it. (But every time I've said this before, he rips off his tail again. )
  1. How much do you feed him?
  2. What do you feed him?
  3. How often do you feed him?
  4. What is the current water temp?
  5. Have you tried raising / lowering the water temp?
  6. Have you tried giving him more attention? Less attention?
  7. What size tank is he in? How long has he been there? And what was the previous tank size?
  8. Is there a filter? If so, how much flow is there?
  9. Does he have hiding places that he likes? Or floating places, like plant leaves that are high in the water?

My guy slowed down after I changed the brand of his pellets, started feeding him more (Maybe he had an upset stomach!), put him in a very regular feeding schedule, started interacting with him more, gave him taller plants, and made sure he had darkness at night. Then again, maybe none of that mattered, and he just slowed down on his own...

I know how you feel. My Neptune is a tail biter, and I feel like I've tried everything. I am going to get some IAL and see if that does anything. I'm switching to Stress Coat + for all my tanks too. I haven't changed his water (tomorrow is his change day), and we shall see how that works.

How can you tell if they're biting their tails? I have 2 ohms,,I've never seen them biting they're tails, but both now have tattered tails. How can I tell if it's tail biting or fin rot?

Jeri - Sometimes, it can be a little difficult to determine which is occurring.... Look at the edges of his fins:
Fin rot - look for discoloration (dark areas) along the edges. Sometimes, the edges will look ragged.
Tail biting - look for chunks missing, often U-shaped.

You could also start a thread about them. (Include pictures if you do this. Pictures are really helpful to people trying to diagnose the problem.)
