Spaghnum moss? So confused.

I have been researching adding peat moss to my filter. Looking to soften up the water a bit, without throwing parameters all over the place. Couldn't find any at the nearest big box hardware store.

I do have spaghnum moss for orchids. From what I can tell, spaghnum is the same as peat, just not as broken down.

Is that correct? Can I use spaghnum moss in my filter? It is 100% moss, no fertilizers or other additives.

Sphagnum moss shouldn't hurt your fish but I don't know how much effect it has on your parameters. I use it in a couple of my tanks just on the bottom and none of my fish have had a reaction to it.

You could probably find Sphagnum peat moss online. It is not that expensive at all and shipping shouldn't be too expensive either if you are only purchasing a small amount.

Thank you! It seemed too light to be what I wanted, but googling was very unhelpful.
