I was wondering what would be better for a planted tank. I really want to do this right, so if I do soil I will need a cap. And I want black sand, so I'm not sure if that will be difficult or not. But I can get Eco-complete in black and it looks nice. I'm just wondering what you guys prefer and why.
I only have experience with soil and sand cap. Works amazing for me. I got some trumpet snails in there as well do aerate the soil for me to release gas bubbles. You can find black sand as well for a cap. Hopefully someone who has used both eco complete and soil/sand will chime in here for you. As I said in the other thread Soil/Sand is way cheaper then eco complete
I have a 10 gallon with eco-complete, and a 10 gallon with soil and a sand cap and I actually like both. My dwarf sagittaria and hornwort are the only plants I've noticed that do better in the soil tank, within weeks they were spreading like crazy. In the eco-complete the sagittaria didn't spread at all in the 4 months it was in there. My hornwort keeps dying in all my tanks except my NPT. The only con to the NPT is that the soil can make a huge mess if it ever gets into the water, so make sure to put enough sand on top of it.
