Seems a bit high to me, though some fish might like it that hot. But if you have a community tank w/ several species, chances are that most of them are feeling a bit too toasty in 85 degree water. I'm only a beginner myself, but from my research 77 +/- 2 degrees seems to be a pretty agreeable temp to keep most species comfy. It really depends on the type and variety of fish you have. This is a completely off the top of my head theory but my guess is that most top and middle swimmers like warmer water, while the bottom swimmers like it cooler. This of course is a broad theory and doesn't take into account the geographic origins and respective average water temperatures of your species' natural habitat. But in a nutshell: if you have a one or two species tank, research the fish and find out; if you have a community tank, upper 70s is my suggestion.

The fish age faster in temps like that, too. ( i don't think it actually makes them grow faster so none of y'all with fry go trying it).

It *will* make some types of fish breed faster (if you have any livebearers, you're going to start pulling your hair out soon). However, that's way too high for a standard temp. I'd recommend getting it down to at least 82 degrees. Your tank should range somewhere between 78-82 optimally.

i just have bettas there are 3 males in a 30g and a snail. so how do i lower the waster temp?

Do you have a heater in there? If so, turn it down. If not, and it's just that it's very hot where you live, you may want to think about getting an air conditioner. You can also get a fan to blow across the surface of your water, but it probably won't make enough of a difference.

It's also possible you have lights that are producing a lot of heat. Are your lights incandescent? If so, you'll want to replace that with a florescent light.

Make sure the water you add isn't more than 2 degrees cooler than the tank water. Otherwise you'll shock them with the rapid temperature change. Any change in temperature in this tank needs to be done gradually.
