5.5 unfiltered questions

I have a 5.5 that's established, and I do have a working filter, but my betta hates it, and it's in my bedroom and I hate the noise. Is it safe to have a 5.5 with absolutely no filter.
How often would I need to clean it without a filter?
Any other things I should know if it's safe to do this?

What about a quieter filter? Always better to have one. We've got a Hagen Mini Elite internal filter that costs less than $10 in a 5 gallon. It's S-I-L-E-N-T.

What type of filter do you have?

An old Marineland one that came with the tank kit. It's probably on it's last leg. The closest petco/petsmart is an hour away at the moment, so I really don't want to take a trip to get it. Would he be okay with out one until May when the Petsmart in my town opens up?

As long as you follow a strict water change schedule, you never need a filter. There's always ordering online also!

I have a tetra 10i in my 5 gallon. Current is a bit strong but I squished some foam where the water comes out and added a bunch of tall, bushy silk plants in the vacinity of the filter. But no, its not mandatory to have one. The one for my 10G was maing so much noise, I unplugged the damn thing. The tank is next to me bed and I couldn't take the noise anymore.

Another option is a sponge filter - they wont distub the water as much as a HOB but the airpump might be noisy. The one I have is pretty quiet. I almost never see sponge filters in stores so you may need to order online from amazon.com or ebay. And you will need an airpump and tubing plus the sponge filter. It shouldnt cost too much - maybe $20 at the most?

What type of lighting so you have? Live plants can help suck up ammonia.

Erm, it's just a 15 watt incandescent. I have a couple marimo balls that are in quarantine right now since I don't want any little snail hitch hikers.
