I'm sorry I scared you. The one you got is perfectly fine!!!!!!!!!!
Did you get an air control valve so you can adjust your air flow?

or a gang valve like this http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...AvailInUS%2FNo

It's just a good idea so you can slow down the pressure if you need to.

I haven't yet but thank you for suggesting it. I will buy one from Petsmart when I get the air pump and airline tubing. where does the valve go?

I feel like such a newb X_x

You cut the airline between the pump and where it enters your tank, then attach the ends to the valve.
When you have everything in place and turn on the pump, you can adjust the valve until you have a slow steady stream of bubbles just enough to where you have just a little distubance on the surface right over the filter, which will usually not disturb the rest of the surface enough to affect your fish. Mine still blows bubblenests in the opposite side!
