Exclamation Tail Troubles... Very bad, very sad.

Saintfishous my half moon double tail came home with me last April, a year ago! Since then, we've both been through some horrible living situation since I lost my home. So after couch surfing and not the best care for him we have a solid home and he was upgraded from a sad little 1gallon to a nice spacious 10gallon.

Right away peolple want to say "move him back to a small tank to heal his fins!!!", well. He is so much happier with all this space, and he's been acting SO healthy. He just has some nasty battle wounds...

Severely torn, horrid tail and scale loss on his face. It honestly breaks my heart.

I do not feel comfortable using AQ salt, I feel it will kill him. He doesn't act sick at all, he's active, poops plenty normal and eats fine.

Water changes 1-2x a week, 76-78*, hikari pellets / frozen blood worms diet.
He's alone in his big tank, I need more plants for him to rest on...

Please help? :( before&after pix :

1) Why do you feel that short term use of AQ salt will kill him?
2) How did he get this? Was it fin rot or an injury?
3) Is there currently any sign of fin rot or infection? If so, would you be willing to use an antibiotic?
4) If you aren't willing to use AQ salt, would you be willing to use Epsom salt? It doesn't cause fluid retention or stress the kidneys the way that AQ salt does, and it has some mild antimicrobial activity. It also won't harm your plants.
5) What percentage of the water do you change each time?

If you are not willing to move him or use aquarium salt (which is much, much safer then medications), there's not much to tell you right now. Please fill out the "please answer as many of these questions" sticky at the top of the emergency page.
