I am assuming a sponge filter does not need a "swish"

I have not been "swishing" my sponge filter since my presumption is that it's purpose is to grow BB bacteria. I was reading OFL water change reccomendations and the swish is mentioned every time. So I thought I'd just be sure that this is for mechanical non sponge filters.

You need to give the sponge a good squeeze in used tank water every once in a while ... otherwise, the pores in the sponge will get clogged and water can't flow through them.

You won't ruin the bacteria colony, as long as you do it in tank water.

yup. If you do it in regular tap water, it will kill the bacteria. Even though the instructions on Deep Blue Sponge filters say to rinse under cold tap water because hot water kills the BB
