Plastic mesh as a cover

Can I use plastic mesh to make a makeshift cover for one of my aquariums?

Probably. What does it look like and what kind of plastic is it made from?

It's just a sheet of plastic mesh that people use to needlepoint with yarn.

That would be fine people use them for tank dividers. If you have enough mesh you can sew sides onto it with fishing line and "cap" the tank. I had to use card board when I first got my tank until my covers came in.

If your tank is not a standard size you might be able to order this one and go to a hardware store and have them cut it and sand the edges so it will fit. The latch is stick on so you can put it on after it's cut.

i used my mesh divider as a lid for my 2 gallon Sterilite bin tank. and, i'm using a plastic divider i cut up as the lid for my 2.5 glass tank. it's perfectly safe and fine. just make sure you have a way to keep it on, if you have kitties, dogs, or kids.

The only thing about the plain craft mesh is that it doesn't hold in the humidity the fish need for their labyrinth organ. But, you can take some saran wrap (the clear veggie wrap) and wrap it around the mesh, and just tape it down the edges. This will keep the humidity in, and provides you with an easy lid. :)

Another option is to go to a hardware store and get some acylic or plexiglass. Sometimes they will cut it for you, other times you may have to do it yourself, (you'll just need to buy a plastic cutting knife) and they can tell you how to do it. :) It's easy, and makes a nice clear top for your tanks. :)
Or, if you have some old picture frames hanging around, you can take the glass out of those and lay them across your tanks, works the same way.

Just make sure you leave a section open for air exchange along one side. :)

Ahh, then I wouldn't worry about the humidity too much. :)

The plastic wrap on top of the mesh would still be helpful to maintain humidity though.
