I recently started up a new aquarium, I have small gravel and planted around 6 bulbs half way into the gravel, its been about a week and no signs of sprouting, but there is a white kinda film/mold growing on the bulbs.. is this bad?

Sounds like your bulbs may be rotting. I've never used bulbs so I no experience with them. I've read other people say they're hit & miss for sprouting.

Leave them above the gravel until they have sprouted, then put the sprouted side facing up when you put it back underneath the gravel. If you leave them where they are then they will rot. And maybe they have sprouted, but sprouted upside down so you cant see them. but take them out of the gravel for sure!

I saw some bulbs at PetSmart but was kind of hesitant about getting them. I don't mean to hijack the OP's thread, but, are bulbs very recommended?

I recommend just sticking with live plants because they are around the same price as bulbs. I feel like bulbs are a 50/50 sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.
