Friends?

Okay, I just set up a new tank....2.5 gallon, heated, with a cave thing and plants. He seems to really like the cave and to hang out by the heater.
I really want to get my little guy a friend, and the chick at the pet store suggested one. I can't remember the specific name, but it's something "shark"....it's black with a red tail. Not too big, semi-aggressive. She said that it'd stick up for himself if my betta picked on him.

Bad idea? I really want him to have a friend :(

And that's just a piece of construction paper behind the tank...there's a lot of clutter on my desk so I figured it looks nicer that way.

that would be a red tailed shark and that might look small at the pet store but he would out grow a 2.5 gallon tank way to fast. ur tank is great for a betta and i am glad to see u have it heated 8) tank mates for a 2.5 gallon k am not 100% sure i would say maybe a pair of platties they are a small fish but they are very nice and there are a lot of varieties umm i know they would do good with bettas i am not sure if the tank is large enough so you might want some one to post after me to see but yea deff no red tailed shark.

You guys should post pictures and approximate prices of these fish you're suggesting. You and your silly abbreviations.

I am but a broke college student and I'm looking for something pretty inexpensive yet nice to look at.

Oh, and is this going to mean I'm going to need a bubble thing =/
Because that would suck.

well its hard to post a pic of a platties cause there are many varieties but platies are like $2 USD a piece at most nothing that would break the bank.

nope u wont need that at all. the only thing you need are some tropical fish flakes for them cause they wont eat betta food and the flakes are llike 2 bucks as well so its not to bad

I'd say add a filter and then you can think about putting in a couple shrimp. That's as much as I'd feel comfortable putting in that tank. (Thank about the 1 inch per gallon rule, even though it's rather inaccurate, betta fish get to be 2.5 inches).

Any other fish and you'd be overstocked. Get a nice air pump and hook up a sponge filter to it (don't forget the check valve!!!!) and you can have those couple shrimp. Unless you had a 10 gallon we could not recommend any other fish and your LFS shouldn't either.
