Sponge filter Q's

So I built a sponge filter today, i don't feel like repeatedly buying filters when I need more. plus the filters have carbon in them, i don't need the carbon just a place for the BB to grow.

Any who its all said and done now, ill change the sponge when I find a new one or one that's not so....yellow. :D lol its sticks out pretty awesomely.

I need advice on a way to weigh it down. right now i have it wedged between the heater and my old filter. im leaving my old one in there for about a week till the new growth on the sponge filter

you could put some gravel in the bottom of it to weigh it down.
