Are Bamboo Shoots a good idea?

I have a male crowntail in a 2.5 filterless, heated critter keeper with a marimo moss ball.

I always wanted live plants but still too nervous to try them. I heard lucky bamboo shoots are easy to care for and they look pretty nice too!

My question is, if i want about two shoots, do I need substrate or can they do ok in a bare bottom tank? Would the naked roots be a problem for the betta?

I know the leaves should be out of water. Any more tips?

Lucky bamboo will grow as long as he leaves are out of the water, so bare bottom is fine. You will need to figure out how to keep them upright, so you may need some stones or something.

Live plants are really not hard as long as you have a proper light (6500k CFL bulb), and some nutrients. Those can be from substrate, from dosing fertilizers, or both. After that, you just pick low light plants and stand back.
