New Female Betta

Alright, so my male betta died today and i was upset. I needed another to help me get through it so i got a blue/turquise female betta name Dory. (finding nemo). She has one horozontal stripe and so i put her in my room where it is very calm. She is moving very slowly and floating on the surface. She isn't eating. I tried bloodworms (freze dried) and pellets. She rarely moves. Here is extra info if needed:
2.5 gal tank
no filter
no heater (i make sure it stays warm)
3 plastic plants
1 cave (if it matters)
purchased a couple of hours ago
she is about 1 in total in length

Please help me make her happier in her new home. I can't bear to lose another betta.

Well she's in a brand new tank so I wouldn't expect her to be the most lively fish in the world. Do you have a thermometer? You can get an accurate glass thermometer for the inside of your tank for less than two dollars, and it'll really help you keep the temperature at the right level. She might be cold.

the water is really warm. She just sank and is barely moving.

Possibly too warm? Even if the tank temp is correct at the moment, I'd still pick up a glass thermometer. Even if it feels right to you, it could be way off.

How did she look before you brought her home? Sometimes the bettas you buy in those little cups are already pretty far gone. Was she swimming around in the cup, or laying near the bottom or something?

A little time to adjust might help her. Car rides can be unpleasent for fishies.

She is lying on the ground breating heavily. She is dying. She was healthy and active at the store in her cup. When she entered the tank, she stopped moving as fast. I'm pretty upset. My parents arn't just going to keep on buying a new fish all the time just to see me get upset and have it die.

Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry to hear that your betta is not doing well! That's really unusual though because I figured that if she was happy in the store then she should have been fine when you got her home...

Look, you need a heater. Bettas will not tolerate water that is under 78 degrees, and there is no way to measure that without a relaible heater and thermometer. Just because "it feels warm" means nothing.

And you didn't cycle. You need to have some sort of cycle for her. She is probably suffering from ammonia poisoning. Daily WC's of 20-50% is required.

A filter will help a ton too.

Unfortunatley, no everything. You never went through a cycle. This could be your problem. And, not knowing the temperature could have been bad.
