Which live plants to use in fluro lighting?

I have zero idea about live plants, not a clue, but I am setting up a 9 litre (2.5 gal) tank for my boy to live in at work and would love to use live plants. Where do I start? Which live plants are suitable for use where there is no natural lighting, only fluro? Also, can I use live plants that are attached to driftwood or do I need to actually plant them into some sort of substrate? Please excuse the ignorance!
