Your OP makes it sound almost like you are wanting to do a biotope style set-up where fauna and flora comes from one particular country/region/location. But then I am not sure whether you actually mean one of those 'stick a betta in a bottle' experiments that seem popular in America.

Just wanted to clarify as I can offer assistance if it is the former.

well its heated, more than 2.5 gal, but im not sure about ammonia. the tank is a 10 gal. you can only do a box or a tank nothing else.

A 10 gallon tank?? Where is it going to fit in the classroom?!! And if you're adding a live fish, the levels of ammonia and nitrites will still reach lethal levels.. Or if nothing else, cause nitrite toxicosis (depending on the duration of the experiment) and I watched my mom's fish suffocate to death on that. 100% my heart is against that on ethical grounds.

I don't think a planted ten gallon with a betta is a bad idea.
You will have to set it up while you're at school, or it'll fall apart during transport.
Just google "Asian biotope aquarium" and it will give you plants that you can use.

Oh, I was imagining like 30 students creating a ten gallon environment each!! It seems a waste though to go through all that expense and setting up for it to be just a week :/

When I was a kid and had to do this I had a 10 gal hex.
How I did it is I went out caught a ton of crickets 2 or 3 spiders and a toad. I added live plants dug up from where I caught my animals.
I would water te plants an everything was fine.
The idea was that the toad would burrow so it would be safe. Crickets are feeders, you can buy them anywhere and spiders make the ecosystem look alive.
I then rattled off some bs got an A then released everything. The toad remained burrowed and safe and my lovely spiders never ate better!
I would suggest not using a betta if any harm could come to it.
If you have it already setup, I would suggest doing bbs.
Or if that's unacceptable triops.
If you do brine shrimp you'll have a nice culture at the end of the class, I you use triops... Well I suppose you'll have triops lol
