New betta... Head is smooth?

I just picked up a little HM from the pet store yesterday and his head is very smooth... Almost like parts of him have been rubbed. Is this caused by high ammonia? And is there anything I need to do to help him?

Does he have white patches on him? If so, does it look smooth or fuzzy or 'slimy'?

can't really tell very well form the pic. but if he is a dragon scale, the head part will be smooth for some of them as if there is no scales.

however, if there are white or red dots in the head and "nose" area between the eyes, then it is HITH.

I have to look really really close but he has one very small spot on his side that doesn't look right... It's not white but it does appear to be a little fuzzy... It's the size of one little scale
