New Betta

I got a new Betta this weekend too...I said I was Not ..but couln't resist..went to P-smart to get supplies..had to look..saw a white..looked at him ..put him back..passed by again....on the way out picked him up..WOW he is pretty..wihie with red pectoral fins..they look like ribbons and his tail is kind of see through with all light pastel colors...his name is Sparkle...he has a 3 Gallon Eclipse with heater, plants, filter ( had it set up for a while with no fish ) He was zipping around checking everything out..he even ate after the first 3 hours of being in his new home!

OK, i am thinking of gettign my 5 year old sister a betta for her b-day....and i was wondering if i could just put a betta in a bowl with rocks and a live plant or do i need a tank with filter, heater, etc.

I would not recomend a Betta for a five year old..They are not just a put in a bowl fish..contrary to what the LFS person tells you..they are tropical fish so..you will need a tank at LEAST 2.5 Gallons, a Heater so your water is 78-80 Degrees F, a filter that you can control the flow rate and you will need to do regular 25% water changes every few days..If you think a 5 Year old is capable of doing this then you should be ok..if not don't get a Betta!
