Red face Filter Cartridge changes?

So here's a question that I haven't seen/possibly missed seeing an answer to. Been reading all over these forums about betta care (and have learned much, this place is so wonderful!) and I do know that to filter a betta tank is sort of optional, but for those who do filter...

...how often is it recommended to change the filter cartridges? Is there a 'regular' amount of time to let pass? Once a week, once a month? Or should it be more a case of 'hmm...this filter is looking mighty used up. Time for a new one!'

Thanks for answers in advance! And if I did miss any refrences to this somewhere, my appologies for my lack of catching it!

If you're trying to cycle the tank (which is why most people use a filter), you want to change the filter media as little as possible since that's where the majority of the beneficial bacteria resides. Most companies will tell you to replace the media on a set schedule, but this is more of a sales tactic... It's best to keep the same media as long as possible, and then to not change all of it at once to allow the bacteria colonies to recover. The stuff starts to look nasty, but that's just a good sign that the filter is doing its job. I keep mine until it starts to disintegrate and then start to phase in new stuff. However, you do want to swish the media around in old tank water - not tap water or new dechlorinated water going into the tank because this will kill off the bacteria - on occasion to dislodge any large chunks of detrious that's building up and preventing proper flow.

You only need to replace it when it starts to fall apart OR if you NEED the carbon which looses its efficency after about a month. An alternative to using cartridges - is to stuff the filter will aquarium foam/sponge. It will still do biological and mechanical filteration but not chemical since there is no carbon. This works well with most HOB filters and the tetra internal filters.

If you need carbon, you can buy carbon packets made for the aquaclear filters and squish it in there althouogh you may have to remove some of the carbon.

Yeah, this is why I was asking the question! My filter is looking pretty grody and nasty, but I was a bit curious about this bit and how it would work.

Hm. Well that's an idea which I may put into practice.

Thanks all for the responses!
