Looks like a male to me because of the large dorsal fin. Actually all the fins look a little bigger than a female's would be. What a beautiful fish!

Looks like he colored up a lot too between the first and last picture today. What size tank is that?

Well, it looks like a pretty good chance of being male to me. ^^

Filters aren't all that important if you're short on cash. Make heaters priority for when you can buy them. :)

Just a side note, Females do have beards! Here's a picture of my girl Mystique flaring at a male which I did not know was a male at that time.

But yes, your Betta looks like a boy! From the body shape to the longer Ventrals. And dorsal fins aren't a good indicator for male/female, just look at my girls fins, she's pretty big!

My brain is going to explode seeing all these beautiful dragon plakats from Petsmart. The stores near me need to restock, like NAOW!!!

On a side note, if the cup was marked as dragonscale, wouldn't that indicate male unless there was a mix-up during a water change or something?

I just always assumed all the dragonscales and crowntail dragons were all male.

BTW, that big cylinder/bowl type thing is really cool. Is that made of glass? Acrylic? Plastic? I've been meaning to get a big one like that, just to switch things up aesthetically.

Yeah he is a dragon scale for sure. But sometimes they screw up and mislabel the bettas at petsmart lol and it's a glass tank I love it!
Thank you very much on the compliment :) I'm really glad I bought him

Female dragonscales and crowntails exist. You overestimate how carefully Petsmart bettas are labeled. xD The "females" could be young males of all types or adult male plakats or even long finned males veiltails that a careless employees sorted. And vice versa. Not to mention that a lot of Petsmart bettas labeled as "dragonscales" are not even dragonscales, but normal metallics or coppers. In fact, most of the real dragonscale bettas from Petsmart I've seen were just marked as regular bettas.
