Exclamation Some odd behavior I just witnessed...

Buckshot has been acting a tad bit strange as of yesterday. He's sort of just been hanging out at the top of the tank and staying still. He's usually a bit more active when he sees me coming or something. I watched him for a little while and witnessed him do something strange. When he went to get some air, he opened up his gills entirely as if he was flaring and left them open for about 3 seconds, closed them, then went for air real quickly again. Is something wrong with him?

I recently had to do a 100% water change because I did something wrong. I replaced his gravel but I realized there was way too many floating particles in the water so I had to do a complete water change because of that and put his old gravel back in.

I'm pretty worried about him right now

Only time he's active is when he's doing his routine "shadow boxing" as I like to call it. (Seeing his reflection in other words)

He hasn't bothered making a bubble nest which he usually does VERY OFTEN.

Don't know whats up with him...

When did you do the water change? Is his tank filtered? How big is his tank? Have you tested his water for ammonia, nitrites & nitrates? That should be the 1st step. If you don't have a test kit I would do a water change & see if it makes any difference in his behavior. Mine sometimes gulp air like that but they don't hang at the top much. When you changed out the gravel & did the 100% water changes its possible you lost a lot of BB so now you're having a mini cycle given your tank was already fully cycled. I may be completely off base because I don't your tank set up.

I did the complete water change 4 days ago as of today. His tank is filtered and he's in a 2.5 gallon tank. I took a sample of his water to my neighbors house who has a water testing kit and the water is fine apparently. I sort of realized that he hasn't made a bubble nest in quite a while now when he used to make one almost every day since I got him but lately he's just stopped all together. He is swimming around but either hangs out on the top or the bottom or in his little cave I have for him. He sometimes clamps his fins for a little while then opens them up. Not sure whats going on with him really. Though I've noticed he's slowed down progressively. He's still enthusiastic about food but other than that he kind of just swims around slowly.
