Do bettas need a heater?

I know that the ideal temperature for them is between 76-80 or so degrees, but that anything above 70 should be okay. My current room temperature in the middle of the day is 72, but I'm quite sure that it dips down quite a bit (perhaps into the high 60's) during the night. Is a heater necessary for my tank?

Yes a heater is necessary for your tank. I imagine you want a healthy betta which means keeping the water clean & warm (78-80F). If the ambiant temp is 72 the water temp will be cooler.

At those temperatures and with the fluctuations that not having a heater will cause, your betta is going to get stressed and most likely sick.

A heater is intended to keep a stable temperature, and your tank is much too cold to go without.

+1 to shellieca.

It's really important, too, that the temperature of the tank be stable. Drastic changes in temp are stressful for bettas, and that can cause them to get sick easier.

Basically, yes, a heater is necessary!

Edit: Ohai, LBF! Same time posting!

Make sure you get an adjustable one with a thermostat, so that you can set the temperature.

The pre-set ones that are often advertised for bettas (those that heat up to certain degrees above room temperature) usually don't hold the correct temperature, or keep it stable.

Yep. Love Eheim jagers. That is the brand I usually recommend.

The heater brands I use and like best are
Penn Plax Cascade
Hagen Elite Mini Submersible
Hydor Theo
Marineland Visitherm

Most of, if not all of these heaters have to be ordered online or found in a local fish shop. Petsmart and Petco generally don't carry them. Good places to order are www.amazon.com and www.drsfostersmith.com
