Veiltail form?

Yes, I am already getting years ahead myself here, but I would like to breed VTs somewhere down the line and eventually DTVTs. I recently bought a small VT with SDB (luckily, it turned out that he looked far worse than he actually was in the store and all his symptons went away after he was placed in his clean new home) and was suprised to find that he was a great looking fish. So, I was wondering what a VT with "good" form would look like, for future reference.

*I'm definitely not breeding this guy and I know his colour is not clean enough, but I am curious to hear some opinions on how far off he is from breeding quality. Thanks.

Good looking guy.. he's still relatively young.
As for any flaws - the only thing I can say really is he has a bit of a spoon/scoop topline. You are going to want a more straight line going from dorsal to the eye area. It's hard to get it exactly straight, but it's something to try to achieve in spawns.

Otherwise I like his form. Don't know if there is a set standard for VTs.. a few places out there has some floating around, but I don't know of anything definitive.

Thanks, Myates.

By any chance, do you have any picture examples of straight toplines? I've seen what I think are smooth toplines, but I do not know for certain.

I say breed for color and body form. Fin form will usually be the same.

Here are some of my girls to show you what I mean.. it doesn't have to be completely straight, you just want to avoid the big spoon dips.

But don't kill yourself trying to find the "best" topline, just keep it in mind when selecting a pair to breed to avoid extreme spoon/dips.

What you can do to avoid bad toplines in fry is breed to a female with a really nice topline. It won't be 100% perfect but it will reduce spoonheads in fry.

There is a European standard for vts. I can try to pull it up...

Thanks for the tip, Matt.

I'm still learning how to judge form, so those pictures are very helpful, Myates.

What are your opinions on crossing different types? For an example, you have a VT male with some kinks you want to work out, but you cannot find a VT female with the right traits? Would breeding with a plakat or a HM initally to improve form be recommended?

OMG that first girl o.o....so who wants to send her to me?

As for your boy he doesn't have perfect and he looks to have some spoon head but with the right girl you can correct that more, get a great topline on a female and then pick the best male and the best female in that spawn. At F2 you should get closer to what you want in your fry.
