Oh, and I knocked out the bottoms and sanded them a little.

I forgot to mention that! I took coarse sandpaper and smoothed out the edges. Anyways, yes. Boiling just kills any bacteria on it, especially since the pieces that aren't a full pot are from one that was outside and had a plant in it. It froze and cracked during the winter. I learned that terra cotta pots have two layers, because I used the outside layer for my tank, while the inside layer was still in tact.
