Pimple/bump on head?

My poor little Kaida appears to have a tiny head lump and it is bothering him. I am noticing stress lines appear (faint but I see them) and he is rubbing the right side of his head on the tank wall and hiding behind his heater (which gave him a superficial singe yesterday- seems to have faded thankfully).
I am tempted to believe this is a bacterial infection and plan to run to the marine store today to pick something up (I tried the LFS but they didn't have anything useful on hand) but I first wanted to double check i was picking up the right thing.
There is no sign of fuzz, he isn't flecked when I shine a light on him and I see no slime coating, just healthy scale...with a bump under the skin. In the last few hours the lump has gained a tiny white dot in the center of it, like a teeny pimple.

I tried to get a picture but because his head is black nothing came out. nevertheless the lump is so tiny I would have ignored it and simply upped the water changes, but his rubbing and stressing is worrying me, please help.

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed?
There appears to be a tiny black lump on his right side a teeny bit above his gill flap. No signs of colored flecks, fuzz or other symptoms.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?
He appears slightly stressed, swims less and while is still perky and interested in things he is also prone to random rubbing fits (always aimed at scratching his right side head/body, never the left) and darting at the gravel hard enough to hit it. he has also begum hiding in between the tank wall and his heater.
When did you start noticing the symptoms?
The swimming declined around three days ago but it appeared to be tired fits where he would suddenly nap in a plant. The lump I noticed yesterday and saw the darting. Today the rubbing has begun.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?
Just some aquarium salt for the moment.
Does your fish have any history of being ill?
None so far (have not had him long)
How old is your fish (approximately)?
Somewhere between 6 months and a year (pet store fish with no spawn records)

here is a picture of the "pimple" my fish had. I used Maracyn 2 to treat it and he is perfect now

Well the specialty store had nothing stronger than melafix so I opted to simply use the bottle of bettafix I already had. I'll monitor him on that and salt for a week and if that doesn't help seek a second diagnosis.

Thanks for the reply too :) Kaida's bump is a bit smaller than that but I feel good to know its not something wacky and untreatable.
