1/2 gallon rescape ideas and lighting?

I bought a baby Betta from petco a couple of weeks ago and I'm going to transfer him/her to
A 1/2 gallon. Only for a month or two so he/she grows a little bigger and sexed to be transferred to another tank.

So, I redid one of my 1/2 gallon Walmart Betta tanks.

Substrate: special kitty cat litter mixed with all purpose sand

Hardscape: some random small piecies of slate

I set it up and put him in right away but I'm having a hard time finding a light thats small and compact even a spiral CFL seems too bulky for this tank.

I have java moss and riccia on hand so I might try and do a carpet if i can't find a good light for other plants.

I have lots of salvina so I'm going to use that for floaters

Will update when I decide what I want to go with

Sorry crappy cell phone pics

That looks bigger than a .5 gallon tank, but maybe because he's a baby? The layout makes it look like a much bigger tank, which is nice. It looks like it would be a great shrimp tank.

I would be cautious of a .5 gallon tank, especially with a baby. They are very sensitive and they need warmer water than normal. That would be hard to regulate the temperature on reliably.

Also, I believe that the babies give off a LOT of hormones that will stunt their growth in a small water volume.

Yeah when I first put him/her in their I was suprised how much open space there was. Temp is okay its always warm in my room. I have a 7.5 watt heater also if it gets too cold. This is the third baby I did a growout on this tank and its fine for a couple of months till they get bigger

So cute:)you will need to do a lot of water changes for 1/2 gall. About every 2 days -100% water changes. Make sure you acclimate him to the new water temperature when you change him. Do you need acclimation instructions? Is he eating?

Thank you. I water change 50/50 every other day then I do 100% every week. He acclimated very well plus he/she is still eating like a hog. I did the transition on the fasting day, but when I fed him today he still eating the same as before.

Yes, water changes will help with everything I mentioned (except temp).

Everything you add to the tank for scaping reduces the water volume. You might want to lose some rocks and go more plants, just to have more water.

I like the look of it so far though, it makes it look larger.

So I decided to go real low tech and just rely on the natural daylight in the room. So I put couple pieces of frogbit and salvinia. I'm also going to put a java moss carpet once I get the craft mesh
