What Plants and How much?

I have slowly been trying to convert my 5.5 gallon tank to a planted tank. Yesterday I went to Petsmart and got a top fin Amazon Sword and a mystery snail. I previously got a Ultra Sun bulb that I am now using but I only have gravel. My Betta, Esau, seems to think I put that snail in his tank as a snack and is constantly stalking him. :( I heard this can be common and may just take the snail out but I thought maybe my tank is just too bare. Besides the Amazon Sword I only have two plastic decorations (the new Asian cherry trees, one large and one small also from Petsmart) and a marimo. I heard it is better to only plant one or two plants at a time?

Anyways, I have been checking out some of the places you can buy plants online and am feeling a little overwhelmed by all the choices. So I was wondering what plants anyone would suggest for a 5.5 gallon tank? And should I get tap root supplements or a solution to add to the water? What brands have worked for you?

I have been looking at Frogbit as something for the top/surface?

On another note I have been thinking about doing a 10 gallon planted tank if this works out well too. :)

I use duckweed as a floater. Super easy to take care of.

Thanks for replying! I saw on aquabid there seemed to be lots of duckweed and frogbit for sale and they were both pretty cheap. :) I think I am going to take the snail out and maybe reintroduce him when there are more plants/places for him not to be in direct sight of my bully betta. I really want to build up some background plants and floaters first. What do you use for taller plants? Also there is a slight current in my tank (my filter is baffled) is that a problem for floaters?

I have some anacharis, rotala, and green crypts for taller plants. The duckweed I acquired by accident. A few leaves came with some other plants from my LFS, and a few turned into hundreds. I'm actually selling some in the classifieds section of the forums.

Current should be fine. I have bubbles coming up from my sponge filter and they just get pushed to the side.
