male bettas

my fish just passed away this summer. but before he died he looked like he needed more oxygen cuz his mouth was not in the water. then we changed the bowl. days later he died. he was about 3 or 4 yrs old and now i dont no if he died of needing more oxygen or of old age......i need to know why he died. any suggestions?

it sounds like he died of old age. when you got him did you buy him from the pet store?

3 or 4 years is about the right time for a betta. when he had his mouth up out of the water was he just haning there vertically? if so he could of died for a number of things. do you have a heater? bettas need 78 degrees so he might have been lethagic. or since he's old he would of been more prone to illnesses.

well anyways 4 years is great and you've done a good job taking care of him

I've read that in old age bettas get more lethargic. So maybe it was old age.

I hope my betta lives that long :)
