hi all! new and just want to make sure im doing things right

Hi all im so happy to have finally registered.
I have i think a good set up but id like to make sure. i have 3 bettas and moved them from each of them having a 1 gal tank each to all 3 in a 5 gal tank with a heater and a light. I have gone through a bit of trial and error with them, around the time i had the first 2 i was learning what their needs and all so we went through a case of fin rot and over feeding. i had the fin rot taken care of and they now eat three pellets once a day each.
i dont know if i can do better for them i feel things arent as good as they can be. i change the water every 10 days or so, i put the stress coat and aquarium salt. i had gotten them a filter but they panic when its in their part of the tank, one of them is a total chicken and turns very pale when its his turn for the filter. I had gotten it because it was a small and i was told that i can control the flow, Deep Blue Bio Maxx Nano filter. the water temp is normally about 76F. I dont keep the filter on anymore since i dont want them to freak out 24/7, im not sure if there is a better filter i can get them or any other suggestions. i need something to possibly move the water through the mesh i have separating them if possible. i hope the picture shows up

the picture doesn't show up... a 5g is to small to be divided 3 ways I suggest either dividing a 10g or getting a 2.5g for the 3rd fish... Craigslist normally has good deals on 10gs

Ok 10 gal it is! What about filter? I've seen pictures of what looks like a big black filter that sits under the water. Would anyone know what I'm talking about?

I think your talking about a canister filter! the aqueon brand normally has good filters from what I've heard! you should do some research on sponge filters they are great for bettas!!

Ok so if I buy this sponge filter for a 10 gal tank http://www.atisponge.com/hydro-sponge/
I would need to purchase an air pump aswell, correct?
Will this air pump work
http://www.petco.com/product/14931/T...Air-Pumps.aspx
