10g betta tank cycling

Hi everyone,

Just looking for a little help here. My Wife brought home a betta over 2 months ago. I found this forum and got some great info on how to care for him.

She brought him home in a tiny 1 gallon tank, and after reading how to really care for him I knew he needed a bigger tank so I went and changed him to a 10 gallon. After having him in the 10gallon I read about the nitrogen cycle and was kind of blind sided by it, because I've never cared for fish before.

Our betta is now in a filtered and heated(78-80 degrees f) 10g tank, and ive been doing 50% water changes every 3-4 days. i use Prime water conditioner. It's been over 2 months now and I always get the same water readings. 1ppm ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate. I was thinking I would at least see some kind of signs bacteria was starting to form but this is how it's been for two months.

I've been debating wether or not to go grab from tetra safe start to throw in there to maybe get things started, but I don't want to do anything that might harm the fishy. Any advice is welcome, not sure if I am doing anything that would prevent the cycle to start or not.

Thanks for reading and any advice.

Don't use tetra safe start. It can do more harm than good.

The fish produces ammonia, as does food waste. Watch the levels of the water with a liquid test kit (like API master kit).It should take 4-8 weeks roughly.

I've been using the API kit for over 10 weeks and there is no sign of a cycle. Every time I take a reading it's 1 ppm ammonia 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates

Have you changed the filter media?

I haven't messed with the filter media. Been running everyday since the tank was first setup

I have no idea what the issue could be then. It couldn't hurt running the tank without fish and just supplementing ammonia to see if that will get the process going. Maybe keep the betta in the 1 gallon while trying that method.

You could get a clean bucket, take the filter out, and do a bucket cycle. You can read abut it here http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=111960

The bucket method sounds interesting, I might give that a try. Do you think I should use some tetra safe start in the bucket, or just try to naturally grow the bacteria?

I seriously thought this thing would start to naturally cycle after so long :(.

Youl'll need to add ammonia as if you were doing a fishless cycle in a regular tank. I wouldn't add tetra safe start because that is usually used in fish-in cycles. You can use some filter media from an established tank. This will speed it up tremendously, and the more you add the faster it cycles.

I'm in the same boat as you but I have used TSS more like 4 times already in the last 7 days. I have also seeded my tank but nothing. Just need to wait, I recommend not to use TSS if you still need to perform frequent water changes for your fish. In addition using Prime can make TSS useless which I use every water change
