Flourish tabs are what I suggest for store bought, but there are better (and cheaper) tabs made by other hobbyists that work just as well or better for a lot cheaper. You can also mix your own tab if you feel confident enough by purchasing the components needed and making them at home.

For a 3g critter keeper a box of flourish tabs will last you about 6-9 months. I really only put tabs under the plants that are root feeders like banana plants or swords, but in a 3g you may do just fine breaking 3 tabs in half and spreading them around, 2 on the left, 2 in the middle, and 2 on the right.
