Went away for a night and now he isnt looking good at all.

Hey all, please excuse me, is my first post. please let me know if i do anything incorrect.

Anyways getting to the issue at hand, I have my male betta in a community tank with 3 females, 5 neon tetras and 2 bristlenose catfish (pleco). Have gone away for a night and have come back to see that a section of his fins has either been chewed off or could it possibly be fin rot?

Here is a link to a pic of the poor guys fins

Have no idea what to do, please help.

Many thanks

John

Well, from what I know, males shouldn't be kept with females, especially in a tank of that size, so perhaps the females became aggressive and may have injured him? Also I believe that if you want to keep females together you need to have at least 5. I would recommend removing the male and keeping him in a separate tank.

Males shouldn't be placed with females, and that is a massively overcrowded tank. Try going to AQadvisor.com and input your specs and fish. It will let you know of the problems.

Yep, I agree with the above posters. It could be the female bettas beating him up, or the neon tetras.
I had to look it up, but 20 liters is about 5 US gallons. WAY too small. If you want a female sorority, which is great fun, start out with a 10 US gallon tank or bigger. You could leave the plecos in, but I think that most of them grow to be VERY large. So, taking them back to the store would be a better option. But yes, get that male out of there.

Welcome to the forum!
