HELP ASAP! heater has fluxuated over 20 degrees!!!

I am getting ready for my first betta breeding but i noticed recently in my tank i am setting up for it (with the male already in there) that my new heater is being really wierd. It stayed at 65 for 2 days (i know, set at 78degrees too) and i submerged it further to see if it was the problem as even the cord can go in the water w/o problems. now its reading 86degrees.... i know for betta breeding it says 80-85 degrees but im afraid it will go up in the night even more... im afraid to leave the lid off to let cool air in and i cant turn it off because the room temp in that room is high 60s.... its late here and petsmart and all stuff is most likley closed... plus its REALLY late... what should i do?

Could you move the male somewhere else until tomorrow?

I say to take the male out of the tank and see whats happens over night with the temperature

Is it your thermometer that is indicating 86 degrees? or the heater?

it was the thermomiter indicating 86 (30 celcius) but it worked fine in the other tanks, plus when i took the lid off of this one water dropped off of it and the water was steaming (room temp is much cooler) but i did figure out it was just the temp imideatley surrounding the heater so i put a new smallish filter for up to 5 gallons just to get water flow (the other filter was too strong so it was removed from tank) it evened out during the night and has remained about 79 all day. betta seems to be fine, swimming building bubble nest ect.
