Could vacuuming the gravel too much prolong a cycle?

I'm 9 weeks into a fish-in cycle and my nitrites are still high. They Plummeted last week, but came back almost immediately.

I've been doing daily water changes and I figured that I might as well vacuum while doing them, but I'm starting to wonder if that's why it's taking so long?

it happens in the middle of a cycle when nitrites are spiking or having fluctuations in readings on a daily basis. Just keep checking the data at least daily. My planted tank took 6 weeks to cycle. The nitrite fluctuations happened around week 4 for me, so I'd say you are about 2/3 in the process.

Even if you have achieved 0 ammonia and nitrite, keep checking for at least a week to make sure you do not have the final spikes. If you have consistent reading of 0 ammonia and nitrite for more than 2 weeks, you are cycled.

FYI, my base water readings for the tap and tap water + fert are 0 ammonia and nitrite. So you may want to see a baseline for your water before adding them to the tank.
