Gill infection?

Hi-- so I bought a young male betta about two weeks ago, and while in the parking lot I noticed his left gill was slightly open and the edge protruding. He's healthy and active (and blows a nice bubble nest) but I'm still afraid it might be infected.

Could I hurt my betta fish by treating him with anti-biotics if it's not an infection? (he's really happy and active...so I don't want to hurt him if it's just a birth defect)
