My New Betta!

Hi All-

I got my very first betta yesterday. I asked the pet store employee which one had been there the longest. He picked up a cup that had a strange looking betta in it. Certainly not the best looking one but he looked healthy enough. I assume he was still there as he wasn't as "pretty" as the others. He was just sitting on the bottom of the cup looking rather sluggish but there were no rips or tears in his fins and he looked pretty thin bodied.

After acclimating him via the float method I released him into the tank (without any of the dirty water that came with him). All the sudden, voila! He perked right up and began swimming around his new digs checking everything out. He seems to really enjoy the heavily planted tank as he was swimming in and out of the plants.

I didn't feed him until this morning. I turned on the tank light and there was a huge bubble nest and he immediately took the three pellets I gave him. I'm really happy I rescued him and I think he's happy too.

As soon as I can I'd like to get a picture of him and post it. He has the most bizarre looking milky white/orange coloring with some "dots" of purple on his fins. I had wanted a violet/purple/red one but his being so weird looking has me liking him all the more.

I usually don't name my fish but with this guy I think must.

That's great that he perked up as soon as you removed him from the cup, poor wee thing.

Yes, I'm very happy with my new guy. I'm just waiting on 5pm so I can go home and check on him. The boyfriend is so funny. I didn't tell him about my new acquisition as I wanted to wait and see how long before noticed. It took nearly the entire day and when he finally did notice he said, "Oh. You got an angelfish". lol

First off, congrats!

Second, I think it's really cool that you saved the one who'd been there the longest. I think I'll ask that the next time I buy a male.

I know, I laughed pretty loud when he said that! The coolest thing about this betta is that he swims right up to greet you, not shy at all, and will take food from your hand. The boyfriend has never got too excited over my fish "thing". He calls me a geek. Anyway, long story short...he's convinced this new fish likes him so he's begining to take an interest. Then he asked if he could feed the betta again...

They seem to know when they are loved and cared for. Good luck and enjoy him. It sounds like he's got a great personality.
