Exclamation Male or female?

Hey all,

Had this *female in my community tank that i purchased a while back, noticed that it was starting to get a little agressive so have now put her in her own tank.

have gone back to the store and their "fish specialist" has said that it definately is male.... so i guess im just looking for a second opinion.

Does it have an egg spot? I'm not an expert by any means, but looking at the finnage I have to say male. I've never seen a female with such a long caudal fin. The anal & dorsal fins look male to with a second look. Long fins usually points to a male.

Don't go by fins alone - I have a female with longer fins than that. The fact that it is so pale and stripey makes me lean more towards female, but the best way to tell is to get him/her to flare. In a male betta, the "beard" will extend a long way out to either side of the head and be very visible under the chin. A female's beard will be much smaller, and be practically non-existent under the chin.

I'm 99% sure that is a young male... The behavior and finnage points to that.

I'd day it's a male as well. It's unlikely with all the females I have owned that a young female is going to have such long fins. Maybe after they get older and have had time to grow and develop do the fins get long like a males but not straight out of the box young from a petstore and while it can happen it's still rare on most females to get long fins like a male at any age.

I also vote male, I know one of my females has as long of finnage as this one but I know she is also much older and agree with peachii. He'll be a beautiful VT though! I'm super jealous of those colors :D

Also, I have a male DT who get's stripy, so completely possible for it to be a male as well.

(also there's some fin rot going on too)

I vote male! I too have a male that will get really stripey so for me that isn't a good indicator of gender... I think checking the beard size may be your best bet... I have heard of something called the candle test (or something like that) where you shine a light on the betta in the dark to see if you can locate any ovaries... I'm not sure if it works or not but I guess its worth a try...

Yeah the light test doesn't always work for darker fish which it looks like this one is. Also I never though the beard was a good indicator either because one of my girls (I know she's a girl, she's dropped eggs before lol) has a rather large beard, surprised me at first too! And she can fully flare it out and puff herself up like a male, crazy really. Betta's are just out to confuse us, that's all they want in life! hahah
