buying fish from overseas

So I've fallen in love with numerous fish on aquabid what all does one need to know when it comes to buying from overseas?

Hi,
Once you pay for your fish on aquabid you'll need to select a transshipper here in the US who will go and pick up your fish when it arrives here at the shipping port and put it in a box to mail it to you. Someone with an import license has to import the fish, and then send it to you, they can't just be sent from Thailand to your house. Usually, whoever you are buying the fish from will have a list of transshippers that you can choose from. I personally use Jennifer, I think she's fantastic and my fish have always gotten here healthy and safe.

You'll have to pay a fee (usually around $5 or so) to send the fish from Thailand to the US and then a shipping fee to send them from the transshipper to you. Usually around $16 I think? For 2 day and $39 or so for overnight. I always overnight mine just to be safe. If you end up using Jennifer, she has a website with the pricing and also instructions on how to acclimate your fish when you receive him or her.

If you're thinking of buying more than one fish, it's cheaper to get them at the same time to save on shipping.

Hope this helps :)

Very helpful! Thank you!

Also, how risky is it for the fish?

I've had 8 so far shipped to me thru the mail, 5 were from overseas, and never had a problem. Just make sure you take the time to acclimate them properly to the water temp and ph in your aquarium, and don't leave them sitting in the box out on your porch etc.

Some sellers have a live arrival guarantee and will replace your fish with a similar fish if you choose overnight shipping and anything happens. It also helps to have a good transhipper and mine definitely has been.

I just received a male from Thailand and total it cost me $65.11 to get him from Thailand to my front door. $20 for him, $5 in shipping from Thailand to my transshipper, $4.50 for import fees, and $35.61 for shipping from my transshipper to me. It is easier to buy from people in the US but Thailand has a lot of great looking bettas. I will buy some of my breeding bettas from overseas but I will NEVER buy a "pet" betta from overseas. It is too expensive to pay for a "pet" betta. My male arrived safe and sound and just fine.

I use Jennifer transshipper too.

I spend about $50 each shipment. $5 import fee and $25 to ship my house.

Well, this fish is a must have so I hope I don't seem crazy for wanting to spend so much on what will probably be a pet but I haven't seen anything similar yet.
