5 Gallon NPT

If I wanted to set up another 5 gallon NPT, but didn't want to put a betta in there, what could I put in there? Would a school of neons do alright? Keep in mind, we are talking heavily planted and well-established.

Honestly, only schooling fish I would put into a tank that size would be microrasbora. Something like boraras brigittae.

Sparkling gourami and clown killifish are two more options.

However, all these fish are quite sensitive and do best in soft-neutral water so if your water is hard or your tank is not properly cycled I would not recommend them.

They might be alright if you do have it heavily planted and established. Maybe 4-5 of them.

I'd do a small colony of shrimp! The Neocaridina family is pretty easy, although they do breed, but you could easily sell them to a LFS if you wanted. So shrimp and a snail of some sort? That's be cool and plenty of fertilizer for your plants that way as well.

5 gallon is still just too small for a school of any fish just because they do need room to swim around, wouldn't be fair to cramp them in a small space, even if it could handle their bio-load.

I feel like I heard you can keep like 3 white cloud minnows in a 5 gal. But don't take me seriously.

minnows are very active swimmers so it's like stuffing someone with a high metabolism in a 4 by 4 room and expect them to stay there happily haha.

Unfortunately, white cloud minnows are a schooling fish and so you would need at least six individuals. Plus they grow to around 4cm so their size and activity levels are not suited to a 5 gallon tank.

Ideas:

1) Red Cherry Shrimp
2) 2 African Dwarf Frogs
3) A mystery or nerite snail (lol)

Not all 3 things together mind you.

I have two five gallon npts right now. They both have 1 betta, 1 nerite snail, and 4 amano shrimp. Not sure why you're saying those three things couldn't be together, unless the frogs would eat them.
