bath time for moss ball??

I have had a marimo -or however the heck you spell it- moss ball for several months, and it has gotten yellow, and is covered in betta flakes. Not pretty.so should I clean it? I did once, but wasn't sure if I was supposed to or not so I stopped, but can I? The way I cleaned it was putting it in a cup full of tank water, and squeezing it and emptying the cup and repeating until it was clean.bad idea or no?

I rinse mine under the faucet, then squeeze it.

Or, with the big one, the bristlenose pleco cleans it!
