proper filter cleaning??

So, yesterday I was cleaning the filter ( puting it in a cup pf tank water, and sort of wiggling it around.) And I noticed that in seconds the water went from clear,to so murky I couldn't see the bottom. The problem was, it was the color of the good bacteria, so was I getting the good bacteria off? I was also rubbing the food flakes, from the filter cartridge, and the brown stuff still came up. It took me almost 5 cups of water to hardly do any damage at all. Help!? Another thing is, that when the brown stuff came, it had a oil-like look as it left the filter cartridge??? again, HELP!?

The color of good bacteria? You got good eyes to see microscopic bacteria!

Seriously, way too much is made of this subject. I constantly see people, good intentioned but less than knowledgeable, screaming, "If you mess with the filter cartridge you will loose all your BB and the world as we know it will come to an end!"

Excuse the expression, but 'horse hockey'!!!!!!!!

BB grows on everything in your tank, i.e. substrate, plants, walls, decorations, and inside the filter walls themselves. Simply changing the filter cartridge will NOT cause you to loose your cycle. I have been changing filters when they get dirty for 15 years in tanks from 100 gallons down to 5 gallons and can tell you that it just doesn't happen.

Put in a fresh cartridge and relax!

Lol ok! I guess since everyone always tells me The brown on the filter cartridge is the good bacteria I just went with it. It sure is a relief knowing that cleaning the filter cartridge won't get rid of the bacteria I want. *whew!* thank you waterdog!

And another note, BB is like sticky glue and pretty much won't come off your objects even if you rub it. It's only if you let the stuff dry out, then your BB dies.

Yes you can replace the filter cartridge if you like, it might cause a mini cycle but generally it won't unless you replace the whole filter lol. I use the old water that I've just siphoned out of my tank and swish the cartridge around in that water so you don't have to use cups. But either way is fine unless your tank is cycling, in which case I wouldn't advise changing the cartridge just yet.
