I am so done with this fish-in cycle... It's time to end this.

It's been 11 weeks, I've done approximately 80 water changes, and wasted almost an entire bottle of Prime.

Nitrites showed up at the five week mark and I have struggled to control them since. I do daily water changes, but every day they jump back up to anywhere between .50-2.00.

I have a plan, though.

I purchased a second ten gallon kit, but decided to wait to start it since the current one was taking so much work. I was thinking that I could put Walter in there for about a week and finish the current tank off fish-less?

It'll suck for Walter, going into an empty tank, but these parameters just aren't safe and I can't control them.

Have you tried putting in natural plants? This would help tremendously if you haven't.

I added 9 stems of Wisteria and a rather large "Willow Hygro". I've heard that those are both great for this kind of thing, but I haven't noticed any difference since I added them last week.

Are you seeing any nitrates at all yet? How much water are you changing when you do water changes?

Nitrates have rested in the 0-5 range for weeks now. I change about 40%.

Any other tips? Should I wait it out a little longer? The plant is growing roots like crazy so maybe it'll start helping soon?

I'm really tempted to just go ahead with the plan. Maybe all the tank needs is a few days without water changes.

Did you put the plants in to begin the cycle? Like, when you set the tank up?

No, I added them about a week ago. I was told that, that would help control everything until the cycling finished.

I wish I knew what to tell you. If your nitrates were staying steady or rising, I'd say do bigger water changes, but you're at a tricky place if they're sometimes zero. :-/ Sorry I can't be more help!

Oh wow. You could always try scrubbing at your media in an attempt to restart to cycle without having to purchase band new media...
